Environmental Responsibility

Another theme that appeals to scientists—and the lay public—is environmental consciousness and sustainability.  In this video, the customer adopts an entirely new technology to produce ingredients for consumer products in a way that causes less harm to the ecosystem.

Again, a significant portion of the video focuses on the problem the customer is trying to solve.  The product is woven into the story rather than being the sole focus.

Social Responsibility

Other customer testimonials can focus on a company’s role in training the next generation of scientists, as in this example from Lake Superior State University:

Note that the emphasis here is on the customer partnership, and less on the features of the instruments.  This theme highlights the social/community reputation of the company as well as its scientific credentials.

Social Media Snippets

Customer testimonials can also be an integral part of a longer-term strategy.  In this set of videos, we created one longer, 5 minute story and a set of three shorter, 30-60 second “cutdowns,” which can be shared on social media or other ways throughout the campaign.

This strategy adds more versatility, drives more views of the full-length video, and extends the shelf life of your content.  You may notice that we’re calling a five minute video “long”; for an internet video, it is.  We generally aim for three minutes or less since a concise story is more impactful than a longer one.  We’ve found that five minutes is the absolute maximum runtime that works for this format.

Multiple Perspectives

Lastly, customer testimonial videos can be done in a variety of styles. Take this one, for example, which uses a variety of different voices, perspectives, and camera angles for an interesting visual effect:
